Dahai Yu was born in Shanghai and studied at Fudan and Tongji universities. In 1981 He moved to Germany for study and received a PhD of Chemistry from the university of Hamburg in 1989, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at CNRS in Paris with a scholarship of the Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation.

Dahai Yu joined Degussa in 1990 and held various management positions as head of laboratory in central R&D, director new business development and technology transfer, director corporate development, head of strategic controlling fine- and industrial chemicals division and head of global agrochemicals and intermediates business. In 2006 he became the regional president Greater China of Evonik Industries. He was appointed as 
member of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries in 2011, responsible for performance materials segment and APAC region.

Dr. Dahai Yu is now managing director of Dr. Yu Beratung and Beteiligung GmbH and Operating Partner of Advent international. In addition he holds several board positions like independent board of directors of Sinochem International and Chairman of Röhm GmbH. He is also corporate advisor of Temasek International and Chairman of foreign advisory council of Shanghai Chemical park.
