Chen Haoyong

AETDEW Academician

Professor Haoyong Chen, an expert in electric power systems, earned his PhD in electrical engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2000, under the supervision of Academician Xifan Wang. He served as a lecturer and associate professor at the university's School of Electrical Engineering from 2000 to 2006. Currently, he leads the “New Energy Power System” research team and the Institute of Power Economics and Electricity Markets at the School of Electric Power, South China University of Technology.

Professor Chen a pioneer in the study of complex power and energy systems by using multidisciplinary approaches from power systems, power electronics, thermal power, optimization and control, information and communication, economics and management science, and artificial intelligence, etc. He has achieved original innovations in theories and approaches of modeling, analysis, optimization and control of such systems, with special emphases on engineering applications, influencing both domestic and international academia and the power industry.

In recent years, Professor Chen has led numerous national and provincial key projects, including the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund Project, the National Natural Science Foundation's key initiatives, and the National Key R&D Program's special projects. He has authored over 300 papers in leading journals and international conferences, as well as three monographs in Chinese and one in English, published by John Wiley & Sons - IEEE Press. His research articles on power market policy, featured in Economic Daily and China Energy News, have contributed to the reform and development of the power industry.

Professor Chen's extensive research on the theory and technology of the “New Energy Power Systems” has found practical applications in regions such as Hainan and Yunnan, as well as the Southern Regional Power Grid. His work has supported green power security in the China (Hainan) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the Free Trade Port of Chinese Characteristics, offering vital technical solutions for integrating new energy into the grid.

Among his many accolades are the First Prize for Natural Science in the 2008 Ministry of Education Awards for Outstanding Scientific Research, the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in the 2022 Ministry of Education Awards, the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from Hainan Province in 2017, and the Second Prize for the China Power Science and Technology Progress Award in 2017.

Through the platform at The Academy of Engineering and Technology of the Developing World (AETDEW), Professor Chen is poised to continue contributing to global development. AETDEW, supported by UNESCO, provides scientific and technological support to the UN’s Global Plan of Action, with the goal of eradicating poverty, boosting economic growth in developing countries, and addressing global challenges such as climate change. Since its founding in 2007, AETDEW has welcomed around 200 researchers from "South-South Cooperation" countries, many of whom have become academicians who actively support the “Belt and Road Initiative.”
